Race Discrimination

Under Oregon’s public accommodation law, private and public entities and businesses cannot deny anyone the services or benefits they provide to others because of race, color, age, sex, or national origin. A substantial economic remedy is available to rectify this wrong. And employers cannot fire a worker for any reason that violates public policy, including race.

Unfortunately, race discrimination is still a major problem in our community. On one day in 2015, we filed seven cases over incidents of race discrimination, “shopping while black.” If a store, an employer or a police officer discriminated against you, you may have a claim. Please give us a call to talk about it.

“Statistics show that African Americans are disproportionately subject to traffic stops, school suspensions and prison sentences,” said Greg Kafoury. “‘Shopping while black’ is simply another reflection of the depth of systematic discrimination.”

The cases were highlighted in an article by the National Financial Times.
