Brian Eason sat down at Elmer’s on December 16, 2014 to write Christmas cards. The waitress took his order then “demanded that he prepay for his meal.” The waitress explained that they had a few people leave without paying and her boss asked for prepayment. When ordering another drink, Eason was again asked to prepay. The waitress said, “I think it’s discrimination and my boss is here, and she’s forcing me to have me do this.”
Eason later asked some white customers if they had to prepay and they said they hadn’t.
The restaurant is located on NE 40th Street in Vancouver. It is owned and operated by Karsan, Inc. as a franchise. Karsan’s parent company, Elmer’s Restaurants is located in Portland.
Brian Eason, 44, is a real estate agent and a deputy with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. He is seeking $100,000 in damages.
